Exhibition & Talk on Cartoons by artist Ajit Ninan in conversation with David Pope

Ajit Ninan, a well-known Indian political cartoonist, excels in both visual and verbal content in his cartoons. He is best known for drawing the Centre stage series of cartoons in India Today magazine and Ninan’s World in the Times of India.He will host a cartoon exhibition including workshops with renowned Australian cartoonists such as David Pope in Canberra and Mark Knight in Melbourne.

Ajit Ninan has worked in India Today, Indian Express, Outlook and is now with The Times of India since 2002.

About Mark Knight

For almost three decades, multi-award-winning cartoonist Mark Knight has been capturing the heart and soul of Australia – and the world – in his cartoons, illustrations and caricatures.

In 1981, he joined the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) as a cadet, working in the art department while attending East Sydney art school.In 1990, Mark became cartoonist for the newly merged Herald Sun (a merger between the The Sun and The Herald) and Sunday Herald Sun, where his work appears seven days a week.

Mark’s political cartoons can be found in the collections of the Victorian State and National libraries in Canberra, the Museum of Australia, and The National War Memorial as well as in the private collections of many prominent Australians. Mark will be in conversation with fellow cartoonist Ajit Ninan from India at the All India Institute in Melbourne.

About David Pope

Award-winning Australian cartoonist David Pope is currently the daily editorial cartoonist for The Canberra Times since March 2008. Drawing cartoons for various key Australian publications since the1980s, Pope has been influenced by the peace and punk movements and community radio of that eighties. Winner of 12 Stanley Awards including three Gold Stanleys for overall Australian Cartoonist of the Year, he has also won important awards from the United Nations Correspondents’ Association and the Museum of Australian Democracy.

In 2015, Pope drew a cartoon titled “He Drew First” in response to the Charlie Hebdo shootingwhich went viral instantly. A signed print of this was presented to Charlie Hebdo magazine by Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop as an official gift in April 2015.

Matt Wade is senior writer and columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald. He was the New Delhi-based South Asia Correspondent for the Herald and The Melbourne Age between 2007 and 2011 and previously worked as the Herald’s Canberra-based Economics Correspondent and Consumer Affairs reporter.

About Cathy Wilcox

Cathy Wilcox studied at Sydney College of the Arts, lived in Paris for a spell, and developed a habit of drawing in small white spaces. She has been creating cartoons for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age almost daily since 1989. Cathy has received multiple awards for her cartooning and is a two-time winner of the Australian Children’s Book Council’s ‘Picture Book of the Year’ award.
