Kalari Chikitsa

A Warrior Healing Tradition

In ancient Kerala in Southern India, a warrior also had to be a healer, as during combat or practice, one may suffer injuries or wounds.

This tradition is still followed in the villages of Kerala today, where the Kalari Master plays the dual role of a Master in martial arts and a healer.

The martial art is called Kalaripayattu and is one of the oldest in the world having its roots in Dhanurveda, the ancient Indian science of warfare.

To heal the Kalaripayattu warrior’s battle related injuries and improve their fighting abilities, the ancient masters developed the healing system Kalari Chikitsa. It follows the fundamental principles of Ayurveda while adding sophisticated manual techniques to manipulate the soft tissue of the body.

Traditionally, it is only performed by those who have first mastered the martial art of Kalaripayattu. In this warrior tradition, one must understand how a person can be harmed to be able to learn how a person can be healed.

Marma

All our treatments involve Marma applications and play a major role in the effectiveness of Kalari Chikitsa.

Marma are the vital energy points located throughout the body. They are often located at junction points, where two or more types of tissue meet such as muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, ligaments or bones.

Any obstruction to these points creates an imbalance which results in disease and discomfort. The aim is to identify and address blockages in the Marma system in order to restore the flow of energy in the body. This has the effect of boosting the body’s healing capacity.

The specialty of receiving a treatment with a Kalaripayattu Master is their practical and in-depth knowledge of Marma. In Kalaripayattu, Marma is a highly secretive and respected knowledge. A Master knows exactly where the points are located, how to affect them in fighting, how to identify them if injured and how to manipulate them for healing. This is unique to the Kalari tradition.

It’s performed to create favourable conditions for the body to return to normal health after injury and is defined by the premise that the treatment can reasonably reverse certain physical effects a patient may be presenting.
