For the past six years, GOPIO Queensland has been observing the GIRMIT Diwas, in the memory of the first Indian to arrive in Fiji, the event is a tribute to those heroic ancestors who left the shores of India for distant lands under the British rule.
Indian arrival day is observed in many countries, where these indentured laborers were taken under harsh conditions, so it makes it a day of remembrance and not a day of song and dance.
