School in Kerala Suspends Call XII Boy & Girl For Hugging in Public, Has the religious police gone too far?
A class XII boy gave a friendly hug to a girl after her great signing performance at the school arts festival at St Thomas Central School, a CBSE school in the state capital.
It was just a congratulatory hug according to the boy, and since then both the boy and the girl have apologized for their actions.
To make things worse, the High court supports the decision made by the school principal to charge the boy and girl on the grounds of showing public affection in front of other school students.
The child rights panel has gotten involved in the matter but they have the power to only recommend to the government for grant of such relief to the victim.
Because the school’s principal is the institution’s guardian with the responsibility and power to take any action necessary to maintain discipline, the child rights commission has no say in this matter, the court said.
Has the religious police gone too far, taking matters in their own hand? What kind of society are we becoming where a young boy can’t give a friendly hug to a classmate without being punished? Has the state of Kerala gone too far in imposing religion in the lives of people? If we want to grow a healthy society we have to accept the fact that a healthy interaction between a boy and a girl is a part of a healthy society. Maybe this will help stop rape like crimes if only young men and women are allowed to show affection without being punished.
