Indian Vocal and Martial Dance Workshop
~Introduction to 2 unique art forms from India, DHRUPAD vocal and CHHAU dance~
Session 1 : Vocal workshop 2-3:30pm
DHRUPAD is the most ancient classical music of north India. The yogic singing technique will expand your voice and breath, leading you to a meditative space.
Accompanying instruments are Tanpura, string instrument to create drone, and Pakhawaj, double sided drum played by Shen Flindell.
Session 2 : Dance workshop 3:30-5:30pm
CHHAU is a tribal martial dance from east India. The elegant and vigorous movement involves handling of sword and shield, imitation of nature, animals and daily village chores.
Session consists of Yoga warm up, Sword dance steps, Dance of Shiva. Take rest any time you need in the session. Bring your own practice sword if you have one. Obsevation only is also possible.

About facilitator : Yuki Taniguchi is a yoga teacher, Dhrupad vocalist, Butoh dancer and Chhau dancer. She regularly travels to India and Japan, and studies Dagar tradition of Dhrupad vocal under Pt. Ritwik Sanyal, Butoh under Yoshito Ohno, and Mayurbhanj Chhau dance under Dr. Ileana Citaristi.
