Om Puri has died at the age of 66, he passed away at his home in Mumbai from a heart attack! He was one of India’s most talented and celebrated actors and was a national award winner of the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India in 1990.
Born in Ambala, Haryana, Om Puri decided to film and television and the Institute of India in Pune, he was also a student at the National School of Drama in 1973. Om Puri made his first film debut in 1976 when he acted in the film Ghashiram Kotwal, the story was based on a Marathi play, by Vijay Tendulkar.
The veteran Indian actor starred in many award winning roles that included Indian movies such as “Ardh Satya” and “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron”. Omi Puri originally rose to fame when he appeared in films such as Ardh Satya, Aakrosh and Paar. As his popularity extended, he then went on to mainstream cinema and starred in roles and films such as aane Bhi DoYaaron and Maachis.
The much loved actor also appeared in many mainstream TV commercials, including Pakistani, Indian and Bollywood, along with many independent Indian Films.
Om Puri, is among some of the most talented and well respected actors of is time. He belonged to the era of the art cinema and actors in films such as Bhavi in 1980, Sadgati in 1981 , Ardh Satya in 1982, Mirch Masala in 1986 and Dharavi in 1992.
Om Puri was not limited to Indian films, the talented actor also made quite a name for himself in Hollywood and British films. He appeared in films such as City of Joy in 1992, The Ghost and the Darkness in 1996 opposite Val Kilmer and the film Wolf in 1994 alongside Jack Nicholson. Om also acted in films such as Charlie Wilson War where he played the General Zia-ul-Haq, starring famous actors Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.
Om Puri was an extremely talented actor who will be sorely missed! Many of his co- stars from various films have expressed their grief over the actors passing and Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences.
