Unfolding: New Indian Textiles is an elegant exhibition which highlights the supreme craftsmanship and beauty of work by contemporary Indian fashion designers and textile artists. Indian textiles are famous around the world for being exquisite, handmade and finely crafted. They represent a compelling aesthetic with deep roots and profound cultural meaning. Featuring saris, uncut cloth and street wear, Unfolding: New Indian Textiles examines the ways in which the traditional skills, motifs and production methods, developed over centuries, are evolving in light of international influences and modern technologies.
The exhibition has been curated by local textile artist Maggie Baxter, who has been travelling to and working with fine Indian textile makers for 25 years.
The opening celebrations will be held at 6:30pm on Friday 31 July and several of the contributing Indian textile artists and designers will be in attendance. There will also be an Indian feast, accompanied by Indian music and a free henna tattoo station. It’s free to attend. The exhibition will then be on display from Saturday 1 August – Saturday 19 September.
FAC is also hosting a number of free public programs in conjunction with the exhibition. On Saturday 1 August there will be a tour of the show and floor talks led by Maggie Baxter and our own curator Dr Ric Spencer. The visiting artists will be speaking about their work. Then on Wednesday 5 August there will be a panel discussion on the role of the hand loom in contemporary Indian textiles.
