Kerala’s National Festival – ONAM 2015 Celebrations in Melbourne
Malayalee Association of Victoria (MAV) is conducting the traditional festival on Kerala state, India – Onam in Melbourne. The event commence on 16th of August 2015, Sunday 10 AM to 6 PM in Springvale town hall.
Onam falls in the month of Chingam (August – September) , which is the first month according to the Malayalam Calendar and marks the commemoration of Vamana avatara of Vishnu and the subsequent homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali who Malayalees consider as their King. In Kerala, it is the festival celebrated with most number of cultural elements such as Vallam Kali, Pulikali, Pookkalam, Onathappan, Thumbi Thullal, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Onapottan,Atthachamayam etc. Onam is reminiscent of Kerala’s agrarian past, as it is considered to be a harvest festival.
The Malayalee Association of Victoria (MAV) was formed 39 years ago in 1976 by a few families that got together and laid the foundation for today’s MAV, which has nearly 2500 family members. MAv is coducting Onam celebrations for last 39 years in Melbourne. MAV president Mr Thomas Vathappally and secretary Mr Saji Mundakkan invited the whole community to the Onam celebrations, 2015 commence on 16th of August 2015 in Springvale town hall, Address is 397 Springvale Road, Springvale VIC. MAV’s 40th year celebrations and Indian Independence day will celebrate in the Onam venue. The price distribution for the Dr Raman marar memorial soccer tournament and recognition of winners of the largest Malayalee cricket league with 350 plus players called Kerala Premier League (KPL) will happen in the venue.
There will be a traditional bonquete called Onam sadya (feast) is another very indispensable part of MAV Onam celebrations and almost every Keralite attempts to either make or attend one. The feast is served on plantain leaves and consists of about 26 dishes. Onam sadya will server by 12 PM. It will cost $30 for adults and $20 for child to enjoy Onam celebrations, traditional bonquete and cultural programs by the famouse artists from kerala – Asianet Cinemala and idea star singer team. After the traditional kerala lunch 11 artists from kerala will conduct a cultural program in Melayalam starts by 2.30 PM, which include songs, dance, comedy skit etc. Organizers expecting a large crowd of 2,000 people for the program.

There will be floral carpet, known as ‘Onapookkalam’,is made out of the gathered blossoms with several varieties of flowers of differing tints pinched up into little pieces to serve the decorator’s purpose. It is considered a work of art accomplished with a delicate touch and a highly artistic sense of tone and blending. There will be a tug of war competition and thiruvathira dance competition from 10 AM onward.
