Event Details
Beautiful Brisbane-based trio SPIRIT OF BHAKTI are coming to Mullumbimby for one show!
Radha Bornstein (vocals, guitar), Menaka Visvanathan-Thomas (Sth Indian Vocals) and Shen Flindell (Tabla). Together they create music to nourish the soul, with original devotional compositions interlaced with Sanskrit mantra and words from the mystical poets like Rumi, Mirabai and Lord Krishna.
Singer/Songwriter Radha Bornstein presents her original devotional compositions with her soulful vocals and acoustic guitar. Raised in a yoga community in California, Radha has been writing devotional songs and poetry from the age of 6. She has released several albums and won a Sunny Award for Original Song of the Year at the age of 16.
Menaka Visvanathan-Thomas weaves a hauntingly beautiful pattern of ancient Indian melody. Menaka has been singing, learning and loving South Indian Classical music since the young age of 5 years. She received tutelage under the loving and inspiring guidance of her mother, Vijaya Visvanathan, the principal of the Sri Krishna Music Academy in Brisbane. Menaka has shared music at many events, including the Woodford Folk Festival, QLD Multicultural Festival and Encounters India Festival.
Shen Flindell brings the music to life with his percussive brilliance, uniting each song with sensitive and intricate rhythms. Since being initiated into the Benares Gharana of tabla by one of the great masters (the Late Pandit Kaviraj Ashutosh Bhattacharya) of the style in 1994, Shen has become one of Australia’s leading tabla players. He has been studying, playing and teaching for 20 years, with performances across Australia, India and Japan. Shen is the visioning force behind the upcoming ‘Sangeet Mela’ – Nth Indian Classical Music and Dance Festival held in Brisbane – Sunday 7th
