History of Chikankari
Chikan is a delicate and artfully done hand embroidery on a variety of textile fabrics like muslin, silk, chiffon, organza, net, etc. It is an ancient form of white floral embroidery, intricately worked with needle and raw thread.
White thread is embroidered on cool, pastel shades of light muslin and cotton garments. Nowadays chikan embroidery is also done with coloured and silk threads in colours to meet the latest fashion trends that keeps chikankari up-to-date.
It is prevalent mainly in the northern heartland of india, namely Lucknow, the capital of a large state, called Uttar Pradesh. For hundreds of year this art has stayed alive which is a tribute to the skill and will of the artistic craftsmen who have handed down this technique from one generation to another.
I am excited and proud to bring this craftwork to Melbourne, the arts capital of Australia.
This is an opportunity to know, admire and possess one of the most difficult yet artistic craftwork done on clothes. Once on, you will be carrying a style, tradition and a true art with you.
