Inner & Outer Dimensions of Ramadan in Sydney, 12th May 2018

The auspicious and holy month of Ramadan is soon approaching, and in preparation Mizan Avenue will be hosting a Ramadan intensive in the Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanafi scholarly schools of thought.

The Mizan Avenue Ramadan intensive will include three separate sessions with respected local scholars including Shaykh Hasan Elsetohy, Shaykh Anthony Andrist and Shaykh Wesam Charkawi.

The Ramadan intensive will provide an overview of the rites and obligations of the holy month and conclude with a general Ramadan talk addressing the inner dimensions of Ramadan.

Students are welcome to participate in any or all sessions including the evening talk, which is open to the public and not exclusive to students attending the day sessions. The $15 price per session includes a Ramadan planner and Fiqh course book.

DAY – FIQH OF RAMADAN ($15 per session)

9.30am – 11.30am : Maliki Fiqh with Sh. Anthony Andrist

12.30pm – 2.30pm : Shafi’i Fiqh with Sh. Hassan Elsetohy

3.30pm – 5.30pm : Hanafi Fiqh with Sh. Wesam Charkawi

EVENING – INNER DIMENSIONS OF RAMADAN TALK (FREE)

6.30pm – 9.30pm

Join us for a talk with Sh. Hassan, Sh. Anthony, and Sh. Wesam as they share valuable insights into making the most out of this Ramadan. Dinner will be provided.

About Sh Hassan Elsetohy

Shaykh Hassan is a professional with multi-qualifications. He is an Engineer, Permaculturist, Business Architect, a Shaykh, Community Leader, Strategist and a Technologist.

Shaykh Hassan currently holds the position of CEO of Muslim Aid Australia (MAA) a global NFP NGO changing millions of lives globally based in Australia. MAA is focused on assisting the most disadvantaged individuals and communities by providing sustainable long-term aid solutions and crisis support during and after emergencies.

Early in his journey of knowledge, Shaykh Hassan completed a Bachelor of Electrical Communications Engineering and a Masters of Electronics Engineering at Cairo University.

Shaykh Hassan is also a graduate of Al-Azhar University, Egypt, where he received the High Ijaza for a Bachelor of Islamic Sciences and Arabic Language. He has studied under and taught alongside many luminaries of the Muslim world receiving ijaza with continuous chain of transmission in Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, Arabic language including various texts and other Islamic sciences.

Utilising his theological training, Shaykh Hassan provides regular classes to students and has served the Hills District Muslim Society, as well as the wider Australian Muslim community as the General Secretary for the Australian National Imams Council.

Shaykh Hassan shares a passion for permaculture and in 2014 completed a Certificate of Permaculture Design. In 2017, he was appointed director of the Permaculture Research Institute.

About Sh Anthony Andrist

Shaykh Anthony completed a BA at the CSU in Ohio. Shaykh Anthony is familiar with Islamic principles and tradition as well as the modern social challenges of living in the West.

He studied Islamic sciences abroad under some of today’s most prominent Maliki scholars. His journey of pursuing Islamic knowledge began in Mauritania in 1998 where he lived and studied under the tutelage of Murabit al Hajj bin Fahfou.

Now a local living in Australia, in 2009, he completed his Permaculture Design Course with Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton and completed an internship at the Permaculture Research Institute.

Shaykh Anthony pursued his passion for beekeeping and permaculture and has written about and taught courses in natural and responsible beekeeping. He has kept bees at PRI, Eden farms as well as the Hornsby region.

Shaykh Anthony is devoted to supporting and advocating sustainable community programs in Mauritania. He is also a surf lifesaver at Maroubra.

About Sh Wesam Charkawi

Shaykh Wesam Charkawi is a Sydney based scholar educated in the traditional Islamic sciences and sacred law, studying over a period of twelve years at the TAB in Syria and at the Lebanese University in Beirut.

Shaykh Wesam has received authority to teach Quran, Sira and Quran Tafsir as well as authorities for Theology (Aqida), Jurisprudence (Fiqh), Principles of Jurisprudence (Usul) and Sciences of Hadith (Mustalih). He is currently a high school chaplain in Sydney and continues his studies with a Masters of Shar’ah at the TBA.

Credited with a published translation of Nur al-Idah (Light of Clarification), Shaykh Wesam’s contribution is a celebrated translation of a classical text, deemed one of the most significant works of jurisprudence within the Sunni-Hanafi school of thought. Shaykh Wesam also translated the equally significant text; The Beneficial Message and the Definitive Proof in Theology by respected Syrian scholar, Shaykh Salih Farfur.

In 2003, Shaykh Wesam established Abu Hanifa Institute and continues to teach the essential sciences of Islam, with focus on inner transformation and change through the study of traditional works.

As an advocate and strong supporter of young people, Shaykh Wesam is passionate about grassroots mentorship and assisting life journeys. He continues to work with organisations and participate in events that strive for social cohesion and reaching out to the wider Australian community.
