Womadelaide Foundation presents Amjad Ali Khan, India’s foremost sarod player. Khan is known throughout the world for his innovation and mastery of this difficult but beautiful 19-string instrument, rival to the sitar in north Indian classical music.
Khan’s compositions and collaborative efforts have earned him many awards and honors, including a Grammy nomination and the Padma Vibhushan (the highest Indian civilian award).
Amjad represents successive refinements of this difficult but beautiful 19-string instrument, rival to the sitar in north Indian classical music. During his 1986 concert tour, when he appeared at the Perth, Adelaide and New Zealand festivals “the wondrous Amjad” (Sydney Morning Herald) won many hearts.
Amjad has collaborated with a number of western musicians such as the late American guitarist Charlie Byrd and with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He received a Grammy nomination in 2010 for the album ‘Ancient Sounds’, a joint-venture with Rahim Alhaj. He has composed a sarod concerto – Samaagam – which he has played with the Scottish Chamber.
The WOMADelaide Foundation: The WOMADelaide Foundation Ltd is a non-profit body established to present the annual WOMADelaide festival, and to foster and develop long-term educational activities and cultural exchange through the festival program. It is listed on the Commonwealth Government’s Register of Cultural Organisations (ROCO), enabling any donations made to the Foundation’s Donations Fund to be fully tax deductible.
