Dr Shiva completed his basic medical degree at Bangalore Medical College in India in 1975. Soon after graduation he joined the Army Medical Corps of the Indian Armed Forces and served for about 10 years. He immigrated to South Africa in 1987. He held positions as Medical Superintendent and Chief Medical Officer in various Provincial Hospitals in South Africa. He joined the South African National Defence Force and held a rank equivalent to that of a ‘Colonel’ in South African Military Health Services before relocating to Australia. Dr Shiva has been working in Port Augusta since 2007. He is an expert in recruiting and insurance medicals. His interests are medico-legal work, travel medicine, occupational medicine, military medicine, mental health, aged care, preventive health and immunisation. He also carries out forensic medical examinations for the SA Police. He has been teaching and supervising medical students and registrars as well as International Medical Graduates.
