Training for Cooperative Veterinary and Husbandry Care in Melbourne, 23rd July 2017
City: Melbourne
Dr Katrina Gregory is presenting another fabulous event, this one being a practical workshop where dogs can attend.
Dr Katrina Gregory is an Applied Animal Behaviourist and Veterinarian who travels the world, eductating zoos and sanctuaries on how to handle their exotic and often dangerous animals with minimal stress.
Kat teaches their handlers to use these methods to reduce the need for darting, anaesthetising and forceful restraining.
How does she do this?
She trains the animal to trust the handler, to allow the animal to present itself when it wants to and to make the often invasive examinations fun and highly rewarding!
But wait….there’s more!
This low stress handling is not just for lions, tigers, bears and walruses (which are some of the animals Kat gets to work with), this also applies to your pet cat, dog, bird, horse and more.
Imagine taking your dog to the vet clinic and asking it to stand still, all by itself, while the vet checks it all over. And imagine asking the dog to present its neck to have blood taken, without the need to restrain it. This is what we will be working on in our Training for Cooperative Veterinary and Husbandry Practical Workshop and it will be interactive and fun for all.
This event will be open to both observers and dog handlers with their dogs. Spaces for dogs will be limited to 6 so it will be first in first served. Spaces for observers will be unlimited.
Dogs attending need to be well mannered dogs, preferably not anxious, not recovering from illness or injury.
This event is open to dog owners, trainers, vets and vet students, vet nurses, shelter workers, groomers, kennel hands, zoo keepers, animal technicians, pound workers and more.
What will we be working on?
We will be working on demonstrating how to get stillness in your dog, how to develop trust to take blood, trim nails, check teeth, clean ears, listen to the heart, even ultrasound the body with minimal or no restraint.Learn how to muzzle train your dog so it practically puts the muzzle on by itself.
Learn how to recognise when your dog is ready, when it is unsure and how to help it.
Learn how to use reinforcers and clicker training to teach your dog stillness, duration and a real state of calmness.
