India to spend Rs 80,000 crore on defence projects, 6 submarines to be build in India
Indian Government has cleared defence projects worth Rs. 80,000 crore on Saturday which will be used to build submarines in India, buy over 8,000 Israeli anti-tank guided missiles and 12 Dornier surveillance aircrafts.
The decision was made after a two hour long defence acquisition council meeting chaired by defence minister Arun Jaitley. The meeting was attended by defence secretary, the chiefs of all three services, DRDO chief and other senior officials.
The Key decisions made in the meeting were as follows:
- Build six submarines in India at the cost of about Rs 50,000 crore.
- Purchase of 8,356 anti-tank guided missiles woth Rs 3,200 Crore
- 12 Dornier surveillance aircrafts with enhanced sensors worth Rs 1,850 Crore
- 362 infantry fighting vehicles worth Rs 662 Crore
The submarines will be air independent propulsion (AIP) capable that will enable them to stay underwater for longer than a conventional submarine besides having enhanced stealth features.
The submarines will have the capacity to be equipped with land attack cruise missiles.
